What is BOTOX® and how does it work?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is the trade name for a refined bacterial product called Botulinum Toxin. When injected into skeletal muscle, it temporarily prevents that particular muscle from contracting. Until the Botulinum Toxin is metabolized, muscles exposed to it are effectively paralyzed. Injecting BOTOX® Cosmetic into a muscle of expression prevents it from contracting, and thereby flattens out the creases or wrinkles in the skin above. Wrinkles in the area of the injected muscle usually reduce or disappear entirely.
What are dynamic wrinkles?
Many of the wrinkles that develop on your face as you age are the result of the repeated contraction of certain muscles of expression. This is particularly true for the wrinkles around the outer edges of your eyes (“crow’s feet”), the horizontal lines across your forehead, and vertical “frown lines” that are often noticeable between your eyebrows. It is the contraction of the muscles of expression that etch wrinkles in your skin. Years of squinting, smiling, frowning, and worrying wears creases or wrinkles in your skin over the muscles performing these actions. Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that appear when a facial expression is made and they differ from static wrinkles, which appear when your face is at rest.
Which areas of my face can be treated?
BOTOX® can only be used to paralyze those muscles that are not critical to the normal functioning of your eyes and mouth. This limits treatment to the wrinkles at the outer edge of your eyes (crow’s feet), certain forehead wrinkles, and those vertical lines between your eyebrows (frown lines). Some wrinkles around your mouth can also be treated.
What does the BOTOX® procedure involve?
A BOTOX® Cosmetic injection procedure is a very simple process performed at VV Med Medical Center. There is no pre-injection preparation or post-injection care, and it takes approximately 5-10 minutes to inject the muscles of expression that cause wrinkles in the affected areas. Aside for mild soreness and occasional bruising at the injection sites, there are usually no side effects. You will be able to return to your normal routine after your injections without any restrictions. When will I see the results from my BOTOX® treatments? Approximately, one week after your treatment session, the injected muscles abruptly stop working and within three weeks the wrinkles above them have substantially improved. When the effects eventually wear off, the injections must be repeated in order to maintain the desirable cosmetic results.
Are there any side effects from a BOTOX® treatment?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is extremely safe when performed properly by a qualified physician such as Dr. Huang. The most common side effects, if they occur, are headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. There are no systemic effects from the local injection of this material into your facial muscles of expression. Occasionally, you may experience mild to moderate pain at the injection sites, lasting for approximately one day following your injection. Very rarely, an adjacent muscle to one that is injected is also weakened and this unwanted weakness is only temporary and wears off in approximately three weeks.
Will I always need to use BOTOX®?
If you tend to habitually frown or lift your eyebrows due to force of habit, BOTOX® will block that behavior and thereby help you “unlearn” the excessive facial expression that would predispose you toward early wrinkling. Smiling however, will most likely be required on an ongoing basis since that is a good habit to have. To reap the benefits of BOTOX® to prevent wrinkles, you must be consistent in your usage.
Does BOTOX® make you look unnatural?
BOTOX® can limit some facial expressions, like frowning and raising your brows however, BOTOX® will not limit your ability to smile and express joy. BOTOX® can be thought of as limiting “negative” expressions without compromising “positive” expressions. A detailed consultation with Dr. Huang will help you determine your aesthetic goals and how BOTOX® can help you achieve them. Also, BOTOX® is temporary so if you do not like the results, they will dissipate after a few months.
Is BOTOX® safe?
BOTOX®, which has been safely used to treat a variety of conditions for more than 25 years, is FDA approved for the temporary treatment of frown lines in people ages 18 to 65.
What areas does a BOTOX® procedure treat?
Where does the BOTOX® go?
BOTOX® generally remains only in the treated muscle and gradually disappears without breaking down or traveling through your body.
Will BOTOX® radically change my appearance?
Expect dramatic results in the appearance of your frown lines as indicated in clinical trials where nearly 90% of the men and women surveyed rated the improvement in their brow lines as moderate to better. Overall, you will look more relaxed and refreshed without anyone knowing you had work done.
If BOTOX® is a poison, how can it work?
BOTOX® has been used safely for over 25 years in the United States to treat cosmetic wrinkles and non-cosmetic problems such as headaches, sweating, muscle spasm, etc. BOTOX® (manufactured by Allergan) is the only currently FDA-approved version for use in the United States. BOTOX® is a purified protein and is very safe when administered by a qualified professional. Dr. Huang has extensive experience with BOTOX® and she performs all of her own injections.
